It was while working as a medical translator that he questioned the idea that Peruvian Bark (quinine) cured malaria because of its astringent and purgative properties, he reasoned that there were many other drugs with a similar nature that had no effect on the illness whatsoever.
As an experiment he took 4 drams of Peruvian Bark and developed all the symptoms of malaria, other than the fever, and continued having the symptoms for as long as he took the drug. Dr. Hahnemann concluded that it was the very fact that Peruvian Bark evoked the same symptoms as malaria which made it an effective medicine for the illness, his first discovery of like curing like.
Dr Hahnemann said "Every effective drug provokes in the human body a sort of disease of its own, and the stronger the drug, the more characteristic, and the more marked and more violent the disease.
We should imitate nature which sometimes cures a chronic affliction with another supervening disease, and prescribe for the illness we wish to cure, especially if chronic, a drug with the power to provoke another, artificial disease, as similar as possible, and the former disease will be cured: fight like with like."
He went on to test many more substances, diluting harmful ones so he could still get the effects without the dangers and made another startling discovery, that the more he diluted them, the more powerful effects they had which led to the homoeopathic Law of Infinitesimals
He published his findings in “The Organon” in 1810 which was received with a mixture of interest and unsurprising hostility by the medical establishment.
Soon after, Dr. Frederic Quin brought homoeopathy to England gaining the interest of the aristocracy and in 1849 founded the London Homoeopathic Hospital. This hospital still stands today and is one of 5 NHS homoeopathic hospitals in the UK.
Since being healed of an ovarian cyst when I was 20 by a single dose of Ignatia I have been a firm advocate of homoeopathy and have studied the traits and qualities of the remedies and used and recommended many hundreds of remedies over the last 30 years.
No one really knows how homoeopathy actually works but I align my views with Dr. Buenavista who has done massive research and clinical trials and through his tests is convinced that water has memory and holds the pattern of the original material in its matrix even after many, many dilutions when there is no trace of the primary matter detectable.
In homoeopathy the emotional symptoms are by far the most important to match with the remedy and the higher potencies are used here for the more chronic illnesses which is why I feel that the higher potencies work further out in the energy field on the emotional and mental levels and as we know in our research in energy therapies today when our emotional and mental traumas are healed our bodies can then heal themselves quite beautifully which, I am convinced, is how the Law of Infinitesimals works.
The lower potencies of 6. 12 and 30 are used mainly for physical and acute symptoms and while these often work brilliantly, really effective homoeopathy works on a person’s constitution, using the higher potencies to clear, balance and align the entire energy system which the physical responds to almost immediately in a lot of cases.
If you can find three slightly peculiar symptoms and exactly match them with a remedy, even if the physical problem is not listed, the results will often be amazing, you could almost say miraculous, as in the case of my large ovarian cyst disappearing after one dose of Ignatia, but the skill of the practitioner is paramount here which is why an experienced homoeopath is worth their weight in gold!
